Computer Software and It's Types

Computer software, often called as software, is a set of instructions and its associated documentations that tells a computer what to do or how to perform a task. Software includes all different software programs on a computer, such as applications and the operating system.

System software is a set of programs that manages and supports the resources and operations of a computer system. It is essential software which creates link between user and computer as well as provides and maintains a platform for running application software. The system software functions as a bridge between computer system hardware and the application software.

Types of System Software

  • Operating System software
  • Utility Software
  • Device Driver Software
  • Language Processor Software

A computer only understands the machine level language also called binary language i.e. Is and Os. So the programmer have to write instructions to the computer using Os and 1s. However writing program instructions using is and Os is very difficult, tedious and time consuming. So people developed other artificial languages to write program instructions. Nowadays such artificial languages are used to develop computer programs. These artificial languages are also called programming languages. But the program instructions written by using such programming languages must be translated into machine level language or machine code by using language processor software. Thus, A niace of software that translates the programming language code into machine code

  • Assembler
  • Interpreter
  • Compiler

Application Software

It is the software which runs under any system software for the user’s productivity. Using these soft wares we can do many works like making project works, documents.

Some common type of system software are given below:

  • Tailored Software / Customized software
  • General or Package Software
  1. Package Software
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Access

     2.Graphics Software

The software which are freely available and no need to pay any amount to use them are called Open source software. They also provide the freedom to use them for any purpose, to modify them and to redistribute copies to others. The Open Source Software (OSS) also are called Free Software (FS). The software like Linux, Open Office, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apache, Netscape, etc. are Open Source software. These software are freely available and no need to pay any amount to use them. We don’t require their license to use them. Their General Public Licenses (GPLS) give the user the freedom to use the program for any purpose, to modify the program and to redistribute copies to others. We can get their source code freely. We can get all types of open source software like licensed software such as Operating system, Word processing, Spreadsheet, Graphics designing, Internet browser, etc. For example, we can use Linux operating system instead of Microsoft-Windows, we can use Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, we can use Mozilla browser instead of Internet Explorer, etc.
